TOWNSHIP OVERVIEW
Victor Township is a friendly, mixed rural agricultural and residential community located in the southeast corner of Clinton County. The township is named after the origin of its first settlers - Victor, New York. Our rural community is nestled between the small City of Laingsburg, Village of Ovid, Charter Township of Bath and within minutes of the larger Cities of St. Johns, Dewitt and Lansing, Victor Township is easily accessible via US 127, BUS 27 and I-69.
Victor is a six-mile-square general law township governed by an elected five-member Township Board. Elected positions include Supervisor, Clerk, Treasurer and two Trustees, all serving four-year terms. The Supervisor also serves as the township Assessor. Township government also includes positions on boards, committees and commissions, giving residents many opportunities to be directly involved at a level of government closest to them. Residents currently serve on the Planning Commission, Road Committee, Board of Review and as election inspectors.
Victor Township’s population has grown steadily in the last decade from 2,784 in 1990 to 3,275 in 2000. Our community is served by the high quality school districts of St. Johns, Laingsburg, Ovid-Elsie and Bath. Housing stock is generally single family residential and farms. Driven by the family-friendly subdivision communities of Lake Victoria, Round Lake and Country Farm Estates, property values have generally appreciated with state equalized value in the township growing from $83,417,000 in 2000 to $158,342,000 in 2009 and taxable value increasing from $70,133,584 in 2000 to $118,502,323 in 2009. Our tax structure is millage based. The total tax rate (inclusive of all county, school, and township millages) for a Victor Twp principal residence in 2009 was approximately 47 mills (1 mill equals $1 per $1000 of taxable value).
Newspapers include the Lansing State Journal, Clinton County News, the Laingsburg Independent, St. Johns Informer and the Weekly. A township newsletter is mailed to residents three times a year. Back issues are available on this site. Rich in history and natural beauty, the Township provides residents and visitors with numerous recreational opportunities including fishing, hunting, camping, boating, horseback riding, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, biking, running and walking. At the center of recreation is Sleepy Hollow State Park. The park offers a number of interpretive nature programs and hosts annual events such as Ichabod Crane Days, Winter Sled Dog races and the Lansing Legislator Ironman Race. Neighboring city and villiage centers offer unique shopping opportunities. Victor is represented at the state level in the 33rd Senate District by Senator Alan Cropsey and in the 85th District by Representative Richard Ball. At the federal level, we are represented in the Senate by Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow, and in the House of Representatives 8th Congressional District by Mike Rogers.
